Concern of the week: A-mimicking Idol
i was watching american idol tonight.
and i just couldn’t get these thoughts out of my head.
there are hundreds if not thousands of amazingly talented people in this country.
most of them will never have the shot to be heard, much less have a career as a singer.
american idol use to be a great resource and opportunity for these talented people to be heard.
but all its become is a glorified karaoke contest.
people mimicking their favorite artists and songs rather than finding their own voice.
maybe start to allow these artists sing their own songs on the show.
maybe make it a requirement to sing an original song at least one week.
its just too bad that great singers are being trained (albeit subliminally) to adapt their voices to sound like their favorite singer just to be able to compete on idol.
this is seriously affecting the music industry and the quality of music and artists in the marketplace. i just wish that the world wanted music with integrity and meaningful artists with things to say, not just television produced cover songs.
